Our scientific summer activities are bursting with fun—just the ticket for a big family day out.

Hop on the Miniature Railway, feel the thrill with the high-speed Mallard Experience and wonder at some of the greatest locomotives in the world. Come and join in the fun!
Pop-up Science

Specially for our young visitors who ask ‘why?’. See how science and technology can make everyday things work on the railways through fun demonstrations and interactive activities.

Laddie and the Lost Teddy
Come and join the museum’s very own station dog, Laddie, on this storytelling adventure as he uses his senses, investigation skills and the help of his friends to reunite a lost teddy with its owner.

Talks: How a Steam Engine Works & Winding Engine
You are invited to find the wonder behind these industrious machines during our daily talks. Explainers will delve into the technology and innovation behind a powerful steam engine and the impressive Winding Engine.

11.00–15.00 every day, free
Build a Locomotive
Visitors will learn how mysterious steam engines work by building a LEGO locomotive in a session with an Explainer. Sessions last 20–30 minutes and visitors can take their locos with them to continue the fun at home.
