Established over 145 years ago, Bakers of Danbury are a privately owned Essex based heritage building contractor with an excellent reputation for conservation, quality and craftsmanship. We work across Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Kent and Hertfordshire as well as into East, North and Central London.

As well as specialising in the preservation and restoration of historical buildings, churches and ancient monuments, our scope of work also includes new build, education and modern refurbishment projects. We also have a specialist insurance repairs division that works with leading insurance companies, loss adjusters, engineers and policy holders. We pride ourselves on attention to detail and the quality of the works carried out.

Our approach is rooted in traditional building methods where we combine our traditional know-how with new and innovative building solutions. We have a dedicated team of experienced building professionals, project managers and site managers. Our clients benefit from us having a directly employed team of experienced carpenters, bricklayers, joiners, stonemasons and other tradesmen, many of whom have worked at Bakers for a number of years.

We also have our own inhouse joinery and stone masonry workshop. Our joinery workshop offers a full design and manufacture service of timber windows and doors, bespoke joinery and furniture, woodcarving and architectural timber work. Our stone masons provide specialist stone carving and stone cleaning.

With our wide building experience, the passing down of skills and a long standing history with some of our employees having been with the company for over 30 years, this combines to form the backbone of our organisation and is what we believe sets us apart.

Heritage
Specialising in conservation, restoration and alteration; we have long been associated with many of the region’s historic buildings, ancient monuments and listed buildings.

Churches
We pride ourselves on our attention to detail, skill and quality, covering every aspect of church restoration and repair works from new extensions to structural and roof repairs.

Residential
We are a respected traditional contractor working on residential projects such as barn conversions, new build homes, listed buildings and home renovation, extensions and restoration projects.

Education & Public Sector
Out Contract Management Division specialises in carrying out new build and refurbishment works to schools, colleges and other community and public sector buildings.

Insurance
We provide high quality repairs to properties that have suffered damage from fire, water and subsidence, working alongside insurance companies, loss adjusters and policy holders.

Joinery
Our own joinery division offers skill and craftsmanship to provide high quality traditional and bespoke products such timber windows and doors, handcrafted cabinetry and furniture.

Stonemasonry
Our skilled masons combine traditional methods of stonemasonry with new techniques for new and traditional buildings.

Training

Bakers of Danbury are accredited to ISO 9001:2015 and are CHAS and Safecontractor approved. We hold a number of prestigious awards from recognising our specialist renovation work to receiving the 2023 City of London Considerate Contractor Scheme Gold Award.

Projects

Recent restoration and alteration projects include St Lawrence of Jewry Church, Westminster Abbey, Bourn Mill, The Charterhouse in London, Westminster Cathedral and St Pauls Cathedral.
