Description
Stonehealth began in the early 1980’s and was incorporated in 1989. The company first introduced the revolutionary Jos system into the UK which transformed building cleaning by replacing previous invasive methods such as sand/grit blasting, flooding and hazardous chemicals, many of which caused so much irreversible damage, as well as changing the nature and character of building surfaces.
Being an innovative company, it then developed the Torc system which was gentler and even more effective in cleaning than Jos. It was now possible to remove even heavy carbon deposits whilst retaining a patina. As well as carbon removal Torc is perfect for removing lime and many old oil-based paints and other inflexible matter.
Efficient and Responsible Cleaning Solutions: Stonehealth’s Impact on Heritage Sites
The company then needed to find a method of removing the more modern paints many of which were plastic based which Torc was not able to do. Trials were carried out to find a suitable method resulting in the introduction of Doff which develops super-heated water at temperatures of 150 degrees Centigrade. Doff was found not only to be able to remove the more modern paints but also all types of biological matter including moss and fungi as well as grease, oil, traffic film and atmospheric soilings.
Conservation and heritage practitioners soon became aware of Stonehealth and Its endeavours in promoting sensitive and responsible cleaning. Many notable and listed buildings at home and abroad including royal palaces and cathedrals have been cleaned with Stonehealth systems.
Between Doff and Torc 90% of unwanted matter can be removed but when alternatives are required Stonehealth does have a range of non-hazardous chemicals. For internal cleaning, particularly after fire damage CleanFilm which is a natural latex that works effectively without the use of water.
To ensure that contractors use systems correctly Stonehealth has introduced the approved contractors Rosette Scheme whereby responsible operators have to be trained and use approved materials, provide the company with testimonials and have their systems regularly serviced.
