Our members work worldwide in the development, conservation, and improvement of the built environment. We accredit university degrees, educational courses, and training. Our professional and vocational qualifications are a mark of the highest levels of competence and professionalism, providing assurance to clients and other professionals procuring built assets.

We are the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB): we stand for the science, ethics, and practice of built environments across the world. Everything we do is to improve the quality of life for those creating and using the built environment.

Setting standards for our industry since 1834
Since the first group of Master Builders met in 1834, the CIOB has set and upheld the standards for our industry to meet. We do this for the safety of construction workers, working at 1,200 feet off the ground; for the families living in their first home; for governments planning the future of their cities; for projects as varied as the Houses of Parliament in London to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
